Burg Lauenstein sits on a ridge 550 metres high above the village of Lauenstein, part of Ludwigsstadt, and stands as the northernmost castle in Bavaria. First recorded in 1138, it passed through the hands of numerous owners, from the counts of Orlamünde to the margraves of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, before falling into decay during the 19th century. Its Renaissance main wing, with four corner towers set diagonally, was built in the 1550s under Christoph von Thüna. Rebuilt from 1896 onward in a late historicist style echoing the Wartburg, it now displays a carefully furnished interior with period paintings and furniture.
