Schloss Saalfeld stands on the grounds of a former Benedictine monastery in the Saale valley. Building work started in 1677 under Duke Albrecht and continued under his younger brother Johann Ernst of Saxe-Saalfeld, spanning nearly fifty years until the interior decoration was finished in 1726. The building served as a ducal residence until 1735 before becoming an administrative seat. Its staircase and chapel, decorated by local and Italian craftsmen, still bear witness to this baroque undertaking.
