To make a day of it

Heidecksburg stands in Rudolstadt (Landkreis Saalfeld-Rudolstadt), in Thuringia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Adult admission costs 8 EUR. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Heidecksburg rises above Rudolstadt, perched roughly sixty metres over the old town in Thuringia. Once the seat of the princes of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, the building went through several incarnations, from a medieval stronghold destroyed in 1345 to the baroque residence completed by the late eighteenth century. Visitors can walk through a sequence of state rooms, including a richly stuccoed festival hall topped by a painted ceiling, and explore the Thuringian regional museum now housed within its wings.

What to know

  • The schloss today houses the Thuringian State Museum Heidecksburg along with the Thuringian State Archive, occupying part of its wings.
  • The inner courtyard stretches about 150 metres, flanked by wings built during different periods.
  • The grand festival hall, decorated by Gottfried Heinrich Krohne, still hosts concerts and is open to visitors.
  • The building stands on high ground overlooking Rudolstadt's old town, meaning the approach involves a climb.
  • No verified details on opening hours, prices or accessibility are included in this entry.
