Schloss Brandenstein stands on a rocky outcrop in the Brandenstein district of Ranis. Originally a medieval stronghold, it was the seat of the von Brandenstein family from the 13th century onward, before being rebuilt as a baroque residence at the end of the 17th century by the lords of Breitenbauch. After decades of varied use, including as a youth hostel and later abandonment, the building is now being restored by its current owners, who have opened a café and a small exhibition room recounting its past.
