Standing on the Schlossberg above Könitz, part of Unterwellenborn, Könitz Castle occupies a fortified site dating back to the early Middle Ages, first documented in 1125 when it was ceded to Saalfeld monastery. From a medieval stronghold of the counts of Schwarzburg it was rebuilt in Renaissance style during the 16th century under the Holbach family, before a fire destroyed it in 1951 and it was reconstructed in the mid 1950s. The building later served as a retirement home and then a psychiatric care facility, and since 2021 has belonged to a Thai Buddhist community.
