To make a day of it
Veste Wachsenburg stands in Amt Wachsenburg (Ilm-Kreis), in Thuringia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 10th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Wachsenburg Castle crowns a cone-shaped hill in the Ilm-Kreis district of Thuringia, forming part of the Drei Gleichen, a group of three medieval hilltop castles east of Gotha. Founded as early as the 10th century by Hersfeld Abbey, it passed through many owners, was damaged in conflicts, and was substantially rebuilt between 1900 and 1913 in a neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic style evoking medieval fortification. Visitors today can see the Pallas hall, the former commandant's house, a well over 90 metres deep dug in the 17th century, and the Hohenlohe tower, a keep added in the early 20th century.
