To make a day of it
Schloss Neideck stands in Arnstadt (Ilm-Kreis), in Thuringia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
In Arnstadt, in Thuringia, Schloss Neideck survives today mainly as a ruin crowned by its tall tower, the remnant of a former moated castle built in the sixteenth century on the foundations of a medieval stronghold. Seat of the counts of Schwarzburg-Arnstadt for close to two centuries, it lost its purpose once the court moved to Sondershausen, and gradually decayed until part of it collapsed in 1779. The 65-metre tower has been restored and can be climbed, while the cleared ruins on site now display a 1:20 scale model of the castle.
What to know
- Only the 65-metre tower can actually be visited and climbed.
- The rest of the building is a partially cleared ruin, with no rooms or floors to walk through.
- A 1:20 scale model of the castle stands on site and can be seen daily.
- A model of the town of Arnstadt around 1740 is displayed in the nearby gardener's house, built around 1650.
- The site served as an outdoor filming location for a boarding school in a German TV series until 2015.
