To make a day of it
Schloss Marienburg stands in Amt Wachsenburg (Ilm-Kreis), in Thuringia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.
Schloss Marienburg stands in Ichtershausen, part of the municipality of Amt Wachsenburg, on the grounds of a convent founded almost nine hundred years ago. Duke Bernhard of Saxe-Gotha began building a residence here in 1677, naming it after his wife Marie Hedwig of Hesse-Darmstadt, but the project was left unfinished once he moved his seat to Meiningen. It was only completed between 1710 and 1715 by his son Friedrich II under master builder Johann Erhard Straßburger, and the baroque facade with its triangular gable and ducal coat of arms still survives today. Later used as a prison and, until 2014, as a juvenile detention centre, the building lost most of its original interior decoration and gardens.
What to know
- The building served as a prison and later as a juvenile detention facility until 2014, which greatly altered its interior.
- The original gardens, laid out around a canal diverted from the Gera river, no longer exist.
- The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Thuringia.
