To make a day of it

Mühlburg stands in Drei Gleichen (Landkreis Gotha), in Thuringia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Mühlburg stands on a rocky spur above the village of Mühlberg in Thuringia and is considered the oldest surviving structure in the region. Its history goes back to a land grant of 704, long before the Meinhard family and later the city of Erfurt turned it into a stronghold guarding trade routes. Today visitors find a keep converted into a viewing tower, remains of several defensive walls, and the foundations of a chapel dedicated to Saint Radegund. The castle belongs to the Drei Gleichen group, and from the top of the tower the other two, Burg Gleichen and Wachsenburg, come into view.

What to know

  • The castle is reached from the south via a wooden footbridge crossing the ditch toward the Wachsenburg.
  • A small museum on medieval pottery and household items can be visited on site, along with an inn.
  • The keep can be climbed during opening hours and offers views of the other two Drei Gleichen castles.
  • An open-air cinema is held on the castle grounds each summer.
  • Parts of the grounds are on uneven rock with steps, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
