To make a day of it

Burg Torstein stands in Bad Tabarz (Landkreis Gotha), in Thuringia, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Torstein sits on a rocky spur of the Kleiner Wagenberg above the Lauchagrund valley near Bad Tabarz in Thuringia. Rather than a standing castle, it is the site of a former earthwork and rock fortification, now overgrown and largely reclaimed by woodland. Its most striking feature is a massive natural porphyry rock gate that gave the site its name, along with a curved rampart and ditch still traceable on the ground. Visitors come mainly for the forest walk and the vantage point rather than for any built architecture.

What to know

  • No standing structures remain: the site is essentially a forest walk rather than a castle visit.
  • Access is on foot from the Dürre Wiese shelter, along a path that crosses the rampart and the rock gate.
  • The terrain is uneven with steep drops on both sides of the spur, so care is needed.
  • The area lies within a protected nature reserve, which limits forestry use nearby.
  • There are no opening hours or fees, as this is an open-air site freely accessible on foot.
