To make a day of it

Schauenburg (Friedrichroda) stands in Friedrichroda (Landkreis Gotha), in Thuringia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burg Schauenburg is a medieval ruin standing on a 630 metre summit above Friedrichroda, in the Landkreis Gotha, Thuringia. Built in the 11th century by Ludwig the Bearded, it was the first stronghold of the Ludowingian dynasty before they raised the Wartburg. Only a few shaped rock edges and scattered wall fragments survive today, since the original structure was largely built of timber. The main draw now is the view over the Thuringian Forest and the town of Friedrichroda.

What to know

  • The site can only be reached on foot, via a path starting from the last houses on the Herzogsweg in Friedrichroda.
  • The first stretch of the climb is steep before the path continues through the forest to the summit plateau.
  • Almost nothing remains of the original structure, the appeal lies mainly in the view and the wooded surroundings.
  • Along the way is the Mariaquelle spring, a good spot for a break.
  • The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
