To make a day of it
Schloss Ehrenstein stands in Ohrdruf (Landkreis Gotha), in Thuringia, Germany. Adult admission costs 12 EUR. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Ehrenstein stands in Ohrdruf on the site of a former collegiate foundation, built from the mid sixteenth century onward by Count Georg II von Gleichen over the remains of a much older church and monastic buildings. The site preserves traces of settlement going back to antiquity and includes remains of what may be one of the oldest known stone churches in Thuringia. The present four winged, two storey building blends Renaissance and later Baroque work, and after a serious roof fire in 2013 that destroyed part of its collections, it was fully restored and reopened in 2022.
What to know
- The Schloss today houses the local history museum, the town archive and the municipal library of Ohrdruf.
- Only one Rococo hall from the eighteenth century has survived with its original decoration.
- The 2013 fire destroyed a doll collection and models of historic buildings, so these are no longer on display.
- The full restoration following the fire was completed with the reopening in June 2022.
- The redesigned inner courtyard has been open to the public since 2010.
