To make a day of it
Burg Schwarzwald stands in Luisenthal (Landkreis Gotha), in Thuringia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.
The Burg Schwarzwald is a medieval castle ruin perched on a narrow rocky ridge above the village of Schwarzwald, part of the municipality of Luisenthal. Built to guard a trade route crossing the Thuringian Forest toward Oberhof, it became in the 14th century the administrative seat of a large forested district. Only scant remains survive today, a stretch of wall, ditches and the traces of a rock-cut ditch, though the site is laid out with walking paths and viewpoints over the Ohra valley. A small monument commemorating the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 stands in the western part of the former castle grounds.
What to know
- The site is freely accessible outdoors, with no opening hours or admission ticket.
- Only wall fragments and ditches remain, there is no standing building to explore.
- Access is on foot via forest hiking paths, including a climb up the rocky ridge.
- It suits a short stop during a walk through the Ohra valley rather than a visit in its own right.
- The forested grounds are also used for forestry work, so visitors should keep to the marked trails.
