To make a day of it

Burg Brotterode stands in Brotterode-Trusetal (Landkreis Schmalkalden-Meiningen), in Thuringia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burg Brotterode survives today only as an archaeological site, perched on a rocky spur above the valley west of Brotterode, within the Thuringian Forest. Founded around 1050 by the Landgraves of Thuringia, this medieval stronghold has long since vanished, though its location at 591 metres above sea level can still be traced through the remains of a ditch and defensive rampart to the north. Visitors mainly encounter a wooded panorama and faint traces of former quarrying rather than any standing structure.

What to know

  • No standing structures remain, only faint traces of a ditch and rampart within the forest floor.
  • The site is reached via signposted paths from the western edge of town, a short walk.
  • A rest area has been set up on one of the small plateaus of the former site.
  • The surrounding land is used for forestry, so visitors should keep to the marked trails.
