To make a day of it

Hallenburg stands in Steinbach-Hallenberg (Landkreis Schmalkalden-Meiningen), in Thuringia, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Hallenburg rises above Steinbach-Hallenberg on a porphyry outcrop on the southwestern slope of the Thuringian Forest. Once the residence of the lords of Hallenberg and later the counts of Henneberg, the building was torn down by princely order in the early 17th century after years of decline, leaving only ruins. A rockfall in 1919 tore away a projecting ledge of the cliff and changed the site's appearance, though its outline still marks the town's skyline. Since 1984 the tower has again worn a roof rebuilt after the old design.

What to know

  • The site is an open-air ruin, with no roofed building to visit inside.
  • Reaching it involves a path climbing a rocky spur, requiring some physical effort.
  • No opening hours, admission fees or accessibility details are available for this site.
  • The view from the rocky promontory over the valley and the town of Steinbach-Hallenberg below is a main reason to come.
