To make a day of it

Wasserburg Schwarza stands in Schwarza (Landkreis Schmalkalden-Meiningen), in Thuringia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Wasserburg Schwarza has all but vanished, which is exactly what makes the site notable: there is no longer a castle to tour, only a history to trace. Founded around the 9th and 10th centuries by the Counts of Henneberg, it guarded the roads crossing the Thuringian Forest toward Meiningen and Rohr. Repeated inheritance disputes passed it between owners until, between the 16th and 18th centuries, the lords of Stolberg built a three-winged schloss on its site. Almost nothing of the original moated castle remains today.

What to know

  • Almost nothing of the medieval Wasserburg itself can still be seen today.
  • The building standing on the site, Schloss Stolberg, has been privately owned since 1992.
  • Restoration work begun in 1994 was halted and never resumed for lack of a usage plan.
  • The site is located in Schwarza, in the Landkreis Schmalkalden-Meiningen, Thuringia.
  • No visiting hours, fees or access details are available, as the site is not set up for regular public visits.
