To make a day of it
Burgruine Henneberg stands in Meiningen (Landkreis Schmalkalden-Meiningen), in Thuringia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Burg Henneberg stands on an isolated hill east of the Meiningen district that bears its name, rising more than 500 metres above sea level near the watershed between the Werra and Main rivers. This ruin was the ancestral seat of the counts, later princes, of Henneberg, and reached its architectural peak in the thirteenth century before repeated divisions of the family estate reduced its importance. Visitors can still see substantial stretches of the curtain wall, the keep, remains of a great hall and a private chamber, plus a system of ditches and earthworks reinforcing the more exposed southern approach. A path climbing the western slope leads through an early gate before reaching the inner courtyard.
