The Käfernburg was a hilltop stronghold on the Schlossberg, above the Angelhausen-Oberndorf district of Arnstadt. Founded around the year 1000, it guarded an old trade and military road running through the Ohra valley and the Oberhof pass. For centuries it served as the seat of the Counts of Kevernburg, but it fell into decay after the Thirty Years' War, its stones reused by nearby villagers for houses and roads. Only an earthen rampart system remains today.
