The Burg Ehrenstein stands in ruins atop a rocky spur overlooking the village of Ehrenstein, part of the town of Stadtilm. Founded as early as the 12th century by the Counts of Schwarzburg, it underwent its main phase of construction in the 14th century, to which most of the surviving masonry belongs. Visitors can see a remarkably well preserved keep rising twenty five metres high, along with the remains of a residential hall divided into several floors. Surrounding walls and three round bastions still bear witness to the defensive system that once guarded this border stronghold against the Counts of Gleichen.
