To make a day of it
Schloss Niederroßla stands in Niederroßla (Landkreis Weimarer Land), in Thuringia, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Schloss Niederroßla no longer exists: this baroque hunting lodge, built around 1738 for Duke Ernst August of Weimar on the site of a former moated castle, was torn down after the Second World War. Goethe stayed there several times between 1779 and 1789 and is said to have planted chestnut trees in the park himself. Damaged by a bomb strike, the building briefly housed the town hall and refugees from the eastern German territories before Soviet occupation authorities ordered its demolition in 1947. Nothing of the structure remains to be visited today.
What to know
- The castle was completely demolished in 1947 on the order of the Soviet occupation authorities, and no building survives.
- There is therefore nothing of the Schloss itself to visit, only the site at Niederroßla that marks its former location.
- The moat that once surrounded the castle was filled in with rubble from the demolition.
- The main historical interest lies in its connection to Goethe, who stayed there several times between 1779 and 1789.
