Perched on a limestone spur high above the Saale, the ruined castle of Saaleck sits only a short distance from its old rival, Rudelsburg. Construction dates back to the early 1100s, when the Margraves of Meissen are thought to have raised it to counter the bishop's fortress nearby, and two round towers roughly 23 metres high still dominate the site. Visitors can climb the west tower to a lookout platform built in the early 1900s, passing a medieval fireplace and latrine still embedded in the stonework.
