Burg Apenburg stands in Apenburg-Winterfeld (Altmarkkreis Salzwedel), in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 12th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burg Apenburg stands as a ruin on an artificial mound, in what was once marshland south of the village of Apenburg. Built in the 13th century to guard the crossing of the Purnitz on the road linking Salzwedel and Gardelegen, it replaced an earlier stronghold destroyed in 1343. What remains today is the keep, converted into a lookout tower, a pointed-arch gateway and sections of the surrounding walls.

What to know

  • The site is an open-air ruin with no known opening hours at present.
  • The keep, now converted into a lookout tower, stands at the northeastern corner of the former enclosure.
  • The von der Schulenburg family, owners from 1351, later built a separate manor house, the Herrenhaus Apenburg, which is not part of the ruin visit.
  • A small family burial ground and a 19th-century neo-Gothic chapel stand in the adjoining park.
  • The ground, once marshland, makes sturdy footwear advisable.
