Burg Salzwedel stands in Salzwedel (Altmarkkreis Salzwedel), in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 8th century. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Salzwedel survives only as ruins set in a park at the northern edge of Salzwedel's old town, in Saxony-Anhalt. Probably built in the 9th century to guard a river crossing on the Jeetze, along a trade route between Magdeburg and Lüneburg, it later passed into Ascanian hands. What remains today is chiefly a round keep some twenty metres tall, sections of the defensive wall, traces of the moat, and St Anne's chapel.

What to know

  • The site is an open-air ruin within a public park known as the Burggarten.
  • The burg's residential building was demolished by explosives in 1899, so only fortified remains and the chapel survive.
  • A memorial hall for the fallen of the First World War was built on the grounds in 1923.
  • The round keep, about 24 metres high, is notable for its raised entrance set twelve metres above the ground.
