Schloss Blankenburg overlooks the town of Blankenburg, in the Landkreis Harz, in Saxony-Anhalt, standing on the remains of a medieval stronghold dating back to the 12th century. The present building, reshaped in Baroque style for the House of Welf, is the largest surviving palace complex of that dynasty. Left empty for years after a training school moved out, it has been under restoration since the 2000s, led by an association and a public-benefit company. Visitors therefore encounter a site still very much a work in progress.
