Schloss Stiege stands on a Harz hilltop in Oberharz am Brocken; tradition holds that a stronghold already existed here in the early tenth century under Henry I, later becoming a count's residence and then an administrative seat. Of the original fortress with its four corner towers, only the southwestern one survives, now part of a building formed by two wings meeting at a right angle. The southern wing, a sixteenth century addition, and the roughly twenty metre long west wing reflect the many alterations the building underwent through sieges, plundering and foreign occupations.
