Perched on a wooded rocky spur above the southern Harz, Hohnstein Castle overlooks the village of Neustadt/Harz from its ruined walls. Founded in the mid 12th century, it served as the seat of the powerful Counts of Hohnstein before being turned by the Counts of Stolberg into an extensive Renaissance Schloss, one of the largest in the Harz. Burned down in 1627, it survives today as a substantial ruin, among the best preserved of its kind in Germany. A remaining tower, reached by an iron staircase, gives views over the Harz landscape as far as the Kyffhäuser.
