To make a day of it
Burg Westerburg stands in Huy (Landkreis Harz), in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices were verified at the source on October 2, 2026.
Burg Westerburg stands in Huy, in the Landkreis Harz, Saxony-Anhalt, ringed by two concentric water moats that make it one of the oldest surviving moated fortresses in Germany. Its circular 33-metre keep, entered 12 metres above ground, still rises over the oval medieval core, which the counts of Regenstein expanded before later baroque additions reshaped parts of the complex. The castle chapel, with a pulpit altar dated 1681, remains part of the ensemble, now run as a hotel and restaurant. A stop here fits more naturally into a ride along the Romanesque Road than into a traditional museum visit.
What to know
- The site now operates as a privately run hotel and restaurant, which shapes access to the interior rooms.
- The fortress lies on the Romanesque Road and can be reached via an 80 km cycling route through the former Landkreis Halberstadt.
- The complex still keeps its two original water moats and earthen rampart, visible from the outside.
- No verified opening hours or admission fees are available for this listing.
- The monument is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Saxony-Anhalt.
