Schloss Hessen stands in the Hessen district of Osterwieck, in Saxony-Anhalt. Originally a medieval moated stronghold, it was reshaped in the 16th century into a Renaissance princely residence, later becoming a summer seat of the Brunswick-Lüneburg dukes in the 17th century. Visitors can still make out the Hauptburg, partly ruined, and the better preserved Unterburg with its 45 metre keep and restored manor house. The complex was subsequently used as a farming estate, a role that left its mark on several structures.
