The Burg Hornburg rises on a wedge-shaped hill above the small town of Hornburg, in the Landkreis Wolfenbüttel. Likely founded in the early ninth century, this former border stronghold of the Bishopric of Halberstadt was destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries, before being largely reconstructed in the 1920s on its old foundations, in a style evoking the Middle Ages. Seen from the town, it still looks like a medieval castle, with its oval ring wall and round keep whose walls are three metres thick.
