To make a day of it

Asseburg (Burg) stands in Wittmar (Landkreis Wolfenbüttel), in Lower Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 13th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Asseburg is a ruined hilltop castle set along the narrow southern ridge of the Asse range, not far from Wolfenbüttel in Lower Saxony. Built between 1218 and 1223 by Gunzelin of Wolfenbüttel, it was once among the largest medieval strongholds in northern Germany and was considered unassailable. In 1492 its own garrison set it ablaze during a dispute with the Duke of Brunswick, and it was never rebuilt. Visitors today find remnants of walls, the lower sections of towers, and a partly restored gatehouse with a porter's lodge.
