To make a day of it

Burg Ampleben stands in Kneitlingen (Landkreis Wolfenbüttel), in Lower Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Ampleben survives only as an archaeological site, on a raised platform at the southwestern edge of the village of Ampleben, at the foot of the Elm hills. Built in the 12th century by the von Ampleben family, the fortified castle was torn down in 1425 by townspeople from Brunswick and Magdeburg who accused it of harbouring highway robbers. Only a short stretch of the former moat remains today, and the site now carries a manor house dating from the 1790s. Local legend links the place to the birth and baptism of the folk hero Till Eulenspiegel.
