To make a day of it

Burg Weferlingen stands in Weferlingen (Landkreis Wolfenbüttel), in Lower Saxony, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Weferlingen survives only as earthworks, set in pastureland southeast of the village of Weferlingen in Lower Saxony. Two tree-lined ramparts running north to south, separated by a ditch roughly five metres wide, trace the outline of this former lowland castle. No archaeological excavation has ever taken place here, so the site tells nothing of what once stood on it.

What to know

  • Only earthwork remains survive at Burg Weferlingen, with no visible masonry.
  • The site lies in open pastureland, with no documented visitor facilities.
  • No opening hours, admission fees or access conditions are recorded for this location.
  • A visit means looking at ramparts and a ditch rather than any standing building.
  • The site was mistakenly bombed by American aircraft in 1944, who apparently took its earthworks for a munitions depot.
