To make a day of it

Schloss Destedt stands in Cremlingen (Landkreis Wolfenbüttel), in Lower Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Schloss Destedt occupies the site of a medieval Burg whose early history remains largely undocumented, standing at the foot of the Elm hills along the old trade route between Braunschweig and Magdeburg. Burned down during a siege in 1430 and left in ruins for generations, it was rebuilt from 1693 onward by Joachim Ludolf von Veltheim in Baroque style, with the work completed around 1740 by Georg Philipp III von Veltheim, who added outbuildings, gatehouses and side wings. Its facade, marked by a projecting central section with colossal Ionic pilasters and a gable bearing the coats of arms of the von Veltheim and von Bibow families, reads as a dynastic statement in stone. The landscape park north of the castle, laid out from 1750 and home to a wide variety of tree species including some of American origin, is part of what visitors can see today.
