To make a day of it
Roseburg stands in Ballenstedt (Landkreis Harz), in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 20th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Roseburg stands between Ballenstedt and Rieder, in the eastern Harz region. What looks like a medieval stronghold is in fact an early 20th century creation, built for the Berlin architect Bernhard Sehring on the site of a fortress first recorded in 963. A great hall, a watchtower and a Norman style keep form an ensemble that freely combines Romanesque and Gothic references. The surrounding park, with its terraced cascade and pieces brought from Italy, is as much part of a visit as the buildings themselves.
What to know
- The site is open year round, as the property has been managed by a non-profit structure since 2005.
- The park's water cascade operates from April to October.
- The park belongs to the Gartenträume network of historic gardens in Saxony-Anhalt.
- Despite its fortress like appearance, the building dates from the 20th century, so visitors should not expect genuine medieval remains above ground.
- The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Saxony-Anhalt.
