Schloss Walbeck stands at Hettstedt, in Saxony-Anhalt, on the foundations of a Benedictine monastery consecrated in 997. The present building dates from 1765 and still holds traces of cloister walls within its structure. Over the centuries the estate passed from monastic to noble ownership, then became a state farm, before its recent conversion into what locals now call the Sonnenschloss, named for the solar panels covering its roofs.
