Schloss Seeburg rises on a peninsula of the Süßer See in Saxony-Anhalt, built over the remains of a medieval stronghold whose origins go back to at least the 9th century. Its towers and residential wing reflect centuries of alterations carried out in turn by the counts of Seeburg, the archbishops of Magdeburg, the counts of Mansfeld and later the Hahn family. The massive keep, with walls nearly six metres thick at the base, together with the surviving ring walls, trace a continuous history of fortification from the Romanesque period through to the Baroque changes of the 17th century.
