To make a day of it

Burg Arnstein stands in Arnstein (Landkreis Mansfeld-Südharz), in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Arnstein stands as a ruin on a 210-metre hill at the edge of the Harz mountains, between the villages of Sylda and Harkerode. Founded in the 12th century by the lords of Arnstein, it was expanded over the following centuries, becoming under the counts of Mansfeld in the 16th century a fortified residence grand enough to be called a Schloss. Two Romanesque round towers and the remains of a Gothic hall building are still visible on the site. Gradually abandoned from the 17th century onward, it has been known beyond the region as a romantic ruin since the 19th century.

What to know

  • The castle is visited as an open-air ruin, with no known fixed opening hours.
  • A car park lies at the foot of the hill, from where a footpath runs along the slope up to the ruins.
  • Access is via the villages of Ritterode, Willerode and Sylda, coming from Hettstedt.
  • Since 1992, a local heritage association has been responsible for securing the ruins.
  • The site has featured in several films, including a 1975 adaptation of Till Eulenspiegel and the British film Black Death in 2009.
