Hodeburg stands in Aschersleben (Salzlandkreis), in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.
The Hodeburg, also known as Hohenburg or Hohe Burg, was a medieval stronghold that has since vanished, located about two kilometres south-southwest of the Aschersleben district of Westdorf. No standing masonry remains above ground: the site today is simply a mound in the landscape, rising above the steep slopes of the Eine valley, and its original layout is known only through archaeological excavation. Digs have revealed a moat, a corner tower, a square keep, and a medieval settlement that once stood below the castle walls. What makes the place noteworthy is its history, including the 1216 imprisonment there of the Archbishop of Magdeburg.
What to know
- No visible ruins remain: the site consists only of a raised mound and archaeological traces.
- There is no visitor infrastructure, opening hours or admission fee, since this is an excavation site rather than a developed monument.
- Access is on foot, through open countryside between Westdorf and Welbsleben.
- St George's Church in Westdorf holds epitaphs of the von Stammern family, who owned the Hodeburg into the 18th century.
- The site suits those interested in archaeology and local history more than visitors expecting a monument to view on the spot.
