Burg Freckleben stands on a promontory above the village of Freckleben, surrounded by an extensive system of earthworks that may date back to the Carolingian period. The Romanesque remains still visible today, a round tower and an octagonal-topped keep, were built in the 12th and 13th centuries, when the site belonged first to the margraves of the House of Stade and later to the archbishops of Magdeburg. Visitors can still make out Romanesque twin windows, sections of the curtain wall, and the cellar of a medieval dwelling, on a site whose outer earthworks cover a far larger area than the medieval castle itself.
