To make a day of it

Niederungsburg Unseburg stands in Bördeaue (Salzlandkreis), in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Recorded dating: 9th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Niederungsburg Unseburg is an open archaeological site in the municipality of Bördeaue, preserving the remains of a lowland fortress first recorded in 909. All that survives today are earthworks and a fragment of a gate tower, remnants of a complex that once had a square main building with corner towers and an outer bailey. The site will mainly appeal to visitors drawn to medieval history who can picture a fortress destroyed in 1218 from little more than shaped ground.

What to know

  • Only earthworks and a fragment of a gate tower remain, there is no standing building to visit.
  • The site is outdoors and freely accessible, with no known opening hours or admission fees.
  • No information is available regarding accessibility, parking or dogs.
  • A visit is limited to viewing the earthworks, so it helps to come with some prior knowledge of the site's history.
  • The original fortress was destroyed in 1218, so what remains today is little more than a trace in the landscape.
