The present moated structure dates from 948 and was converted into a hunting lodge in the late 16th century under Elector Augustus of Saxony. The freestanding keep, around forty metres high and topped with an Italian style dome, still dominates the complex. Over the centuries the site served many purposes, from prison to vocational training centre, before returning to a hospitality use.
