The Schloss Dornburg an der Elbe stands in Gommern, in Saxony-Anhalt, beside a quiet pond not far from the Elbe river. Rebuilt between 1751 and 1758 for Princess Johanna Elisabeth of Anhalt-Zerbst, mother of the future Tsarina Catherine II, to designs by the baroque architect Friedrich Joachim Michael Stengel, it replaced an earlier building of 1674 destroyed by fire in 1750. Its later history includes rule by Anhalt-Köthen, private ownership, use by the SA as a sports school, and service as a storage site for the Anhalt state archives.
