Burg Ummendorf stands in the Magdeburg Börde, on the site of a border stronghold founded in 1178 by Archbishop Frederick I of Wettin to secure the frontier with what is now Lower Saxony. The Romanesque keep and the granary on the west side survive from that medieval period, while the irregular three-wing complex seen today was built by the von Meyendorff family during Renaissance alterations carried out between 1535 and 1581. The site now houses the Börde-Museum, with a display of agricultural machinery and an herb garden of more than 400 species.
