To make a day of it
Schloss Harbke stands in Harbke (Landkreis Börde), in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Harbke stands today as a ruin on the site of a medieval moated castle, in the Landkreis Börde in Saxony-Anhalt. The von Veltheim family built a Renaissance residence here between 1572 and 1586, later extended with Baroque additions in the eighteenth century, before the estate was confiscated at the end of the Second World War. The two angled wings and the polygonal stair tower can still be made out, along with the Veltheim and Saldern coats of arms on the surviving facade. The adjoining park, reshaped into an English landscape garden from 1760 onward, contains a ginkgo tree planted in 1758, among the oldest in Germany.
What to know
- The main building can only be viewed from the outside, as it survives only as a ruin.
- The adjoining park, with its ancient ginkgo tree and baroque niche wall known as the Chinesische Mauer, can be walked through freely.
- St. Levin parish church, built in 1572 on the former castle rampart, stands in the southwestern part of the park.
- As no opening hours or admission fees are fixed for the site, it is worth checking locally before visiting.
- The site suits a quiet walk rather than a guided tour.
