To make a day of it
Winzenburg stands in Thale (Landkreis Harz), in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.
The Winzenburg refers to the remains of a former hilltop fortification near Thale, in the Landkreis Harz, Saxony-Anhalt, perched on a rocky spur above the Bode valley close to the Rosstrappe. No standing medieval structure has survived, but the ground still shows traces of an extensive earthwork system known locally as the Heidenwall, which once stretched for several hundred metres. Archaeological finds from the site date back as much as 5000 years, including bronze and iron weapons, pointing to very early human settlement there. The tower now standing on the plateau, the Winzenburgturm, is not part of the original fortification: it was built in 1860 purely as a viewing tower for visitors.
