Burg Schönburg stands on a sandstone outcrop above the Saale valley, roughly forty metres above the river, near Naumburg. Built mainly in the 12th and 13th centuries under the bishops of Naumburg, the complex was never converted into a later residential castle, which is why so much of its medieval fabric survives. Its climbable 32-metre keep still carries its conical stone cap, and long stretches of the outer and inner curtain walls remain standing. The former courthouse, now called the Rittersaal, and a 16th-century Renaissance forester's house are also part of what visitors see today.
