Schloss Blankenhain stands in the town of Blankenhain in Thuringia, on the site of a medieval stronghold founded in the mid twelfth century. The lords of Blankenhain, followed by the counts of Gleichen and later the counts of Hatzfeld, each left their mark on the buildings over the centuries. A fire in 1667 led to a rebuilding that gave the Schloss much of its present appearance, while vaults and other sections dating from around 1500 still survive.
