To make a day of it

Schloss Stadtroda stands in Stadtroda (Saale-Holzland-Kreis), in Thuringia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Schloss Stadtroda overlooks this small town in the Saale-Holzland-Kreis, Thuringia, on a site where a castle is already recorded around 1500. Originally a seat of the counts of Schwarzburg, it was rebuilt between 1663 and 1734 after a town fire destroyed the earlier building in 1638, and became the residence of junior princes of the House of Saxe-Gotha. Prince Christian Wilhelm of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg held court here with his wife, Countess Louise Reuss of Schleiz. The building today houses the local district court, which limits what can actually be visited.

What to know

  • The Schloss currently houses a functioning district court, so visits are essentially limited to viewing the building from outside.
  • The present structure dates from the reconstruction carried out between 1663 and 1734, following a fire in 1638.
  • The building is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Thuringia.
  • No visiting hours or admission fees are available, as this is primarily an administrative building.
