A few kilometres from Autry-Issards, in the Allier department, the Château du Plessis displays a cross-shaped plan dating back to the late 15th century, when Jean Nicolas, lord of the estate, was granted permission by the Duke of Bourbon to build and fortify his residence. Its interest lies in a defensive system that remains legible: a square keep with ribbed vaulting, a stair tower topped with machicolations, round turrets at the corners of the main building, and two detached towers that once flanked a now-vanished drawbridge. Inside, wall paintings and tapestries depict Geoffroy Aubery, owner of the estate around 1553, shown alongside Godfrey of Bouillon.
