In Marigny, in the Allier department, the Château de Champaigue stands with its keep and massive round tower around a triangular courtyard, the result of building work spanning from the 12th to the 18th century. Several layers of history are visible here: the defensive medieval outline, later softened in the 16th century by large mullioned windows added to turn it into a more comfortable residence. Two sections of the former moat remain, most of it having been filled in during the Revolution.
